How to customize TOTOBOBO mask to fit small face?

Totobobo in two different sizes
The TOTOBOBO mask is the world’s first customizable respirator. Other products are only available in a particular size that only fits a particular age range and facial structure. For everyone else, there is little else that can be done.
TOTOBOBO, on the other hand, is capable of being trimmed to fit a wide range of facial sizes for optimal comfort and filtering. The mask fits most adults and can be modified to fit children as young as 5 years old. TOTOBOBO is the most versatile protective mask on the market. Adjusting the mask’s size is simple, just follow these steps:
Note: Use a pair of clean and sharp scissors. Wash your hands before starting.
You first need to determine how small you want to trim the mask. You can make a quick estimate by covering the mask on the user’s face, or better yet, get a TOTOBOBO dummy mask set. If you are not sure about the accurate size, I suggest you to trim the mask one ring at a time. The mask should form a snug fit to the face, but not so tight as to be uncomfortable. Take this into account when trimming the mask. Remember: measure twice, cut once.
You then carefully cut the material of the mask starting from the bottom. Inserting the scissors, follow the curvature of the mask along one of the ridges as you cut and make a complete loop. Trim any excess for comfort and test size as necessary. The excess material can be disposed of, and the mask is ready for use.
Once the mask is cut to fit the desired size, it is ready for repeated, long term protection.

Step 1 - start the cut from the bottom of the mask Step 2 - insert the scissors into one size of the opening Step 4 - turning around to the other side
6 - almost done 7 - see! you've got your small mask now

How to perform a Visual-Seal-Check (VSC)?

Totobobo mask is able to fit a wide range of large and small faces. However, it is not possible to claim that it always seal your face perfectly. Sometimes it require adjustment of the strap and reposition the mask to improve the seal. Sometimes trimming down the mask to a smaller size helps.

Transparent surface indicates good face seal of Totobobo mask
The purpose of a user-seal-check is to provide a fast and reliable method to evaluate the face seal, without the need of fit-test equipments.

User-seal-check of normal respirator (e.g. N95 mask) involve the steps of cupping the filter area with hands, forcefully inhale and/or exhale to sense if there is air-leak. Such method relys on the user’s ability to feel the air movement around the leak area. Sereverl studies shown such method is not relaible.

The Totobobo Visual-Seal-Check (VSC) method (patent pending) is facilitated by a very fine texture molded on the inside of the transparent mask. In normal condition, the surface is dry and it appear as semi-transparent. The same surface turns transparent if there is water stick on the surface. Even a tiny little water trapped between the mask and the face will make the surface change from semi-transparent to complete transparent.

To do a simple Visual-Seal-Check, you apply a little moisture on your face, than put the mask on. Observe the edge of the mask. Where it is completely transparent, there is a good seal. Where there is semi-transparent, there is no seal. It will be consider as a good overall seal If there is a continuous seal circle around the nose and mouth.

Milky surface indicates the face seal leak location
Our user test using a TSI PortaCount system in a hospital, the gold standard of respirator fit test, shows there is a strong correlation (90%+) between the Visual-Seal-Check (VSC) and the standard fit-test results. In other words, it is possible to predict if the mask will pass or fail the gold standard fit-test by performing a TOTOBOBO VSC. This is particular useful for people who don’t have access to a proper fit-test system.

The SuperCool mask is too lose, how can I make it better fit?

The SuperCool may be too big for your face, follow these steps to adjust your mask:
(1) Check: if there is a gap below your chin, and if the upper edge of the mask pressed against the bottom of your nose.
(2) Try to put the mask on upside down to see if you get a better fit. Trim the upper and lower edge of the mask a little (a few mm) at a time. Re-fit the mask and see how it fits.
You should be able to achieve the optimal fit when the mask is trimmed to a suitable size for your face.

How to adjust and tighten the earloop?

To adjust the tension of the earloop so that it is tight enough to secure the mask onto your face firmly, but not too tight that it causes uncomfort feeling.
You may need to readjust the earloop when you first receive the mask, or after cutting the mask to a smaller size.
Follow the diagram below to adjust your earloop. You can make multiple e-loop around the filter so so that the tension is just right for your size.

Use of the mask (first time use)

Will the mask fit my face?
TOTOBOBO mask is made of very flexible material, together with the ergonomic nose profile design, it can adapt to many adult faces without modification. Goto the Try-page to read about testing the size of totobobo mask before buying the mask.

How do I ensure the mask fit my face and forms a good seal?
When a mask touches your skin, there is a seal where air can not go through. A continuous seal is necessary to form a complete loop to enclose the nose and mouth in order to prevent pollutants from leaking into the breathing zone. All face masks require a fit-test to validate proper face seal. However, in many practical situations, such as in an emergency or at home, either fit-test facility is not available, or it is too impractical and time-consuming. TOTOBOBO provides the best alternative called “Clear-Seal check”. Carefully examine the peripheral and underneath the mask; to check if a continuous seal exist surrounding your nose and mouth.

If the seal breaks at some point, it can be improved simply by adjusting the position and the tension of the strap.
If the mask is too big, trim the mask smaller to try again.
There may be a small gap around the nose bridge area. In this case, trimming away the edge that presses deep into your cheek will help to close the gap.

How do I know if the strap (loop) is the correct size?

For optimal comfort (e.g. woodturning), the strap can be adjusted to provide sufficient tention to hold the mask on your face, yet soft enough to allow exhale air to be released between the edge of the mask and the face.

for optimal safety (e.g. hospital), the strap should be tighten such that the mask maintain a good seal regardless of inhale or exhale.

How can I adjust the strap if it is not too loose or too tight?
You can optimize the mask wearing security and comfortable by adjusting the size of the strap-loop. To adjust the strap, press on the release knob on the adjustable clip. Adjust the starp so that it provide the suitable level of force.

Reuse of the mask

Do I need to clean or disinfect the mask for reuse?
For protection against non-contagious pollution, such as traffic pollution, dust or fine particles, there is no need to disinfect the mask. TOTOBOBO mask contains Silver ion, an anti-virus agent. This active agent limits the growth and slowly kills the bacteria or viruses chance on its surface. For most non-contagious situations, it is safe to reuse the mask after 24 hours of leaving it in a clean environment. However in situation that the mask may be contaminated with contagious viruses or bacteria, or when working in critical area in hospital (e.g. ICU), you will be required to disinfect the mask before it can be reused.

How can I clean/ disinfect the mask?
The mask can be disinfected by washing it with disinfecting soap, (like washing your hands), rinse it and letting it dry in a clean environment before reuse.

Do I need to clean/ disinfect the strap as well?
It is a good practice to clean /disinfect the strap together with the mask. Although the entire strap is on the outside of the mask during use, there is a part which can get very close to the eyes, if not careful, virus or bacteria may be on the strap may be accidentally transported to the eyes.
